My Holiday Decorating – Stage 1

I started decorating my home for Christmas this week. I bought the Santa windsock at Walmart for about a $1. The wind has been blowing a lot lately, and I thought Leah Rose would enjoy seeing this blowing in the wind. I temporarily put it on the mini flag pole. I’ve got some other yard decorations that I’m going to put up later this week and I can add that and it will look better.
The wreath on the front door turned out very pretty. This is a battery operated pre-lit wreath. I took the first picture in the daylight, and the second picture after dark with the flash. I tried to take a picture of it without the flash, but I couldn’t hold the camera still. I’ll have to try that later with the tripod and timer. I’m probably going to add a flood light positioned to illuminate the front door. I don’t know how well that will look with the lights on the wreath, but I may alternate the lights every couple of days.
It took a couple of days to figure out how to put the spray on the brick mailbox. It is really not designed for this type of mailbox, but I finally decided to use a bungee cord to hold it down. So far, that seems to be working very well. The lights on it are very pretty in the dark.
I ordered these decorations online from Lillian Vernon. It is described with Star-of-Bethlehem blooms, pepper berries mingled with real pine cones, plaid bows, and twinkling mini lights. I felt it was well worth the price I paid for it. I’ll know after the holidays are over how I feel about going out every night to switch off the battery operated lights.
I was curious about the Star of Bethlehem blooms, so searched on the internet and discovered something that I didn’t know. When the star that guided the three wisemen stopped at the stable, it is said it burst into thousands of fragments and fell to the ground, transforming into these lilies indicating that this was a Holy place. It is described as a strong, white flower with blooms on top, lasting only about 10-15 days. The “meaning” of the flower is Atonement.

Giving Thanks…

I’m a little late posting what I’m thankful for. I spent Thanksgiving at my aunt’s house without internet and I wanted to wait until I got back home. This week has been like all the other past weeks, and I’ve really had difficulty with the idea of even wanting to give thanks. But I do have things to be grateful for, and I know it helps to verbalize them and giving praises to God.
1. I’m thankful for one more year to enjoy my mother’s home cooking. I’m afraid this may be her last time to cook holiday meals. She has spent the last several years taking care of family, but she really needs to slow down. I may have to work on my cooking skills before Christmas to make us a palatable meal.
2. I’m thankful my son came to share our Thanksgiving meal. My daughter, Leah Rose, adores her big brother and that made the day very special for her, even though it was only for a short time.
3. I’m thankful I have leftovers because I surely do not want to eat fast food today.
4. I’m thankful I have been given an opportunity to move back to my hometown, and I’m thankful I have a lovely home. [I'm trying extremely hard not to include a "but" here.]
5. I’m thankful Leah Rose is over her illness.
6. I’m thankful Leah Rose is eating a whole sandwich now instead of taking one teeny little bite and saying “I’m done”.
7. I’m thankful Leah Rose isn’t sleeping in my bed anymore.
8. I’m thankful for my warm, toasty blanket.
9. I’m thankful for Leah Rose’s daycare center. They really have been a life saver this year.
10. I’m thankful for Leah’s school. They have been so wonderful and kind to her, giving her love, support and encouragement.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise;
give thanks to him and praise his name.

The Power of Giving Thanks by Jeff Doles
When you arise in the morning, give thanks for the morning light, for your life and strength.
Give thanks for your food and the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies in yourself.

Up in the Sky

I had intended to enter the “Up in the Sky” Shutterbug Showdown at Club Mom, but I waited too late to take the photo and missed the deadline for entry. I could see the moon in the sky tonight, so I took some pictures anyway.
